What Is the TSA CBT Test?

The TSA Test plays a key role in the hiring process for Transportation Security Officers (TSOs), who help keep airports and travelers safe across the U.S.

This test checks if candidates are ready to handle the important and often high-pressure tasks involved in airport security.

There are two versions of the test: the older “legacy” version and the newer TSA/TSO Assessment Battery (TAB).

What the TSA Test Is For

The main goal of the TSA Test is to see if a person has the right skills for a security role. It looks at how well candidates can spot dangerous items in X-ray images, stay calm and make quick decisions, and use clear English to communicate.

The Two TSA Test Formats

Legacy Format:
This version includes two parts—the X-ray Test (Screener Object Recognition Test) and the English Test. It takes about 2.5 hours to complete. Candidates are tested on their ability to spot threats in X-ray images and their understanding of English, both of which are essential for daily TSO duties.

TSA/TSO Assessment Battery (TAB):
The newer TAB format is designed to meet today’s changing security needs. It features three sections:

  • Trail Making: A connect-the-dots task that checks how quickly you can spot patterns.

  • Image Recognition Speed Run: Tests how fast and accurately you can recognize key items.

  • 2D to 3D Image Mapping: Assesses your ability to understand and mentally rotate shapes.

TAB is shorter, lasting between 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace, and offers a more modern way to evaluate skills like quick thinking, attention to detail, and spatial awareness.

As TAB becomes the standard test in more locations, it’s a good idea to prepare for both formats. Doing so gives you the best chance to succeed and shows you're ready to take on the responsibility of protecting our transportation systems.

Which Candidates Need to Take the TSA CBT Test?

The TSA CBT Test is required for:

  • New Applicants: Individuals seeking to join the TSA as part of their initial application process.
  • Reapplying Personnel: Current or former TSOs looking to reapply or transfer to other TSA locations may also need to take the TSA CBT Test.
