The CAT4, or Cognitive Abilities Test, helps schools understand how a child thinks, learns, and solves problems.
It focuses on reasoning skills such as pattern recognition, logic, number relationships, and spatial awareness rather than classroom knowledge alone.

Figure Classification

Select the correct answer from options (a) to (e), which shape is most similar to the first three shapes?

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: The shape has four sides and is fully shaded, like in the images above. Figures b) and e) are not four-sided figures, d) is a four-sided figure but is not shaded; and c) is an abstract figure and does not match the shapes above.

Figure Matrices

Choose the images a), b), c), and d) that belong with the bottom image, as the upper pictures belong together.

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: While (a) and (b) look alike, take a closer look at the color of the triangle. Images c) and d) are totally different and do not look similar to the sample image in the upper right-hand box.

Verbal Classification

In verbal classification, the aim is for the student to appropriately according to a single-word answer that qualifies objects in a group, as seen in the example below.

In each of these questions, there are three words in bold type. These three words are similar in some way. Decide how they are the same. Then choose the word from the answer choices that goes with the first three words.

A. Purple

B. Yellow

C. Color

D. Orange

E. Paint

Correct Answer: C - Color

Explanation: The student could opt for Paint, but in this case, the words – purple, yellow, and orange are typically referred to as colors.

Verbal Analogies

In verbal analogies, the student must work out which answer pairs perfectly with the given word from A to E.

Choose from options A to E which word best complements the third word.

Spoon → Cutlery : Red → ?

A. Color

B. Cloth

C. Rainbow

D. Paint

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: The analogy is spoon is to cutlery as red are to color. However, a student can immediately think of red as a paint for the wall, but you must look at the first half to fully understand the best answer for the second.

Number Analogies

These are basic math questions where the student must logically derive a method from the sequence to come up with the answer.

A. 10

B. 8

C. 12

D. 7

E. 16

Correct answer is B

Explanation: From the analogies, it is clear that 10 is the number used in dividing the digits on the left. The student must successfully choose whether it is addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication before solving the question.

Number Series

Students must work out which number follows the last digit and choose the best answer from the options below.

Complete the series: 49, 42, 35, 28, -----

A 30

B 25

C 21

D 14

E 7

Correct Answer is C – 21

Explanation: The numbers are multiples of 7.

Figure Analysis

Choose the best answer from options a) to d) when the paper is unfolded?

Correct Answer: A

Explanation: This is tricky as the initial paper does not have a hole in it, but the student must cleverly work out why a circle appears and then unfold it mentally.

Figure Recognition

Find the odd shape from the image below.

Correct Answer: C

Explanation: All the shapes are four-sided except for c, which is a triangle with three sides.
